WARWICK, R.I. (WJAR) — Aramis Segura was sentenced to 17 years in prison after pleading no contest to charges related to the 2022 hit-and-run death of 17-year-old Olivia Passaretti.
Segura, 33, changed his plea in October to charges including driving to endanger resulting in death, failing to stop and render aid, and fleeing the scene. He was sentenced to eight years for the first two charges, followed by nine years for being a habitual offender.
The crash occurred in January 2022 when Segura’s vehicle, estimated to be traveling around 90mph, ran Passaretti off the road while she was driving home on I-95 south. Instead of stopping, Segura fled the scene, hiding under a bed in his Charlestown home before being arrested hours later. Passaretti, a junior at East Greenwich High School, died as a result of the crash.
Olivia’s mother, Janine Passaretti-Malloy, expressed a mix of emotions outside the courthouse. “It’s been three years of torment, torture, just waiting for a day like this and having some semblance of closure,” she said.
In his statement to the court, Segura apologized to Olivia’s family, saying, “I accept full responsibility and will carry this burden for the rest of my life. If I could take it back I would.”
Despite the apology, Olivia’s sister, Victoria Passaretti, said, “Nothing brings her back, and that’s nothing for what he’s done to our family, the community, everyone.”
Months later, Segura’s then-girlfriend, Alicia Peckham, was found guilty of helping him evade the authorities. She was sentenced to three years and 10 months, with part of her sentence served on home confinement.
While the sentence can’t undo the pain caused, Olivia’s family now focuses on celebrating her life and moving toward healing after years of legal battles.
