The North Sumatra Regional Police’s Narcotics Crime Directorate apprehended a drug mule, Andi Sahputra, a 39-year-old resident of Percut Village, Percutseituan District, Deli Serdang Regency, for his involvement in narcotics smuggling.
Andi was arrested on Silobaru Street in Silaulaut District, Asahan Regency, following a tip-off regarding drug trafficking in the area. Upon capturing him at a fisherman’s hut, authorities found 2 kilograms of methamphetamine and 2,000 blue ecstasy pills, all packed inside Chinese Guanyiwang brand tea plastic.
The police also discovered a cell phone and a wallet inside a black backpack. During interrogation, Andi admitted to being a mule, transporting the drugs on instructions from an individual named Mail, who is currently under investigation. Andi stated that the narcotics were supplied by a Malaysian contact, Ling-ling Tan, and intended for delivery to Percutseituan by land.
North Sumatra Regional Police’s Narcotics Crime Directorate, Sr. Comr. Yemi Mandagi, confirmed they are actively pursuing Mail and investigating Ling-ling Tan’s role in the operation. “Drug trafficking across borders is highly dangerous and has a destructive impact on youth,” Yemi said, stressing the importance of exposing the entire network behind these illegal activities.
The police have committed to intensifying their efforts to eradicate drug trafficking in the region. In addition to enforcement measures, they are shutting down known drug hubs and conducting more patrols, particularly at night, to disrupt criminal activities. Furthermore, public awareness campaigns are being launched to educate the public, students, and religious leaders on the dangers of drugs.
Police Grand Commissioner Yudhi Surya Markus emphasized the importance of community cooperation in fighting drug trafficking, with the North Sumatra Regional Police having already handled 398 drug cases in January 2025 alone. These operations resulted in 519 arrests, including 111 users and 408 traffickers. The authorities confiscated significant amounts of drugs, including over 5 kilograms of methamphetamine, more than 54 kilograms of marijuana, and over 5,000 ecstasy pills.
The police have called for more public participation in reporting suspected drug activities to help curb the ongoing drug crisis in North Sumatra.
