Chidozie Nwangwu, better known as Akwa Okoku, a prominent native doctor from Anambra, has been hit with serious charges that have shaken the state. His arrest on February 16, followed by a dramatic court appearance on February 25, has drawn widespread attention, both on social media and in the legal sphere.
Nwangwu, who calls himself a billionaire, is facing five grave charges brought forward by the Anambra State government in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu. These charges involve alleged ritualistic practices, conspiracy to rob, aiding internet fraudsters (commonly known as Yahoo boys), and even providing support to kidnappers and armed robbers.
Justice Onochie M. Anyachebelu of the Anambra State High Court unveiled the full list of charges against Nwangwu during his court session. The allegations detail his supposed involvement in money rituals and forging partnerships with criminals involved in various illegal activities. The charges also include accusations of using charms to assist kidnappers and robbers and offering ritualistic services to internet fraudsters. Furthermore, there are suspicions of his ties to drug dealers.
As the legal process continues, the Anambra State government has made it clear that it plans to seize Nwangwu’s assets, which include a hotel, luxury cars, and other properties allegedly acquired through illicit means.
In addition to these legal proceedings, the community remains on edge due to the shutdown of a shrine operated by another native doctor, Ekene Igboegbueze, who was reportedly linked to similar questionable practices. This action was confirmed by Prince Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, in line with Anambra State Homeland Security Laws.
With the case adjourned for further hearings, this scandal promises to uncover even more unsettling details, keeping the public and authorities watching closely.
