The brother-in-law of Assamese actress Sumi Borah, Amlan Borah, was arrested by police on Wednesday in connection with the Rs2,200 crore online trading scam. Amlan, who is the brother of Sumi’s husband, Tarkik Borah, was apprehended in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, following a joint operation between Assam Police and Bihar Police.
According to officials, Amlan Borah had been on the run for several days. Authorities managed to track him down by monitoring various mobile numbers. “Sumi Borah and Tarkik Borah’s families came under scrutiny after the massive online trading scam was uncovered. Amlan was one of the individuals police had been watching closely,” an official stated.
Meanwhile, sources indicate that Sumi Borah and her husband may soon surrender to the police, as they are reportedly in contact with the Assam Police’s CID. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding their potential surrender.
The online trading scam, which has rocked Assam, came to light following the arrest of the alleged kingpin, Bishal Phukan, at his residence in Dibrugarh. Notably, Sumi Borah, who is a key figure in Phukan’s network, is currently still at large and is suspected to have fled to Nepal. A manhunt has been launched to capture both her and Tarkik Borah, who have so far managed to evade arrest.
Sumi Borah married photographer Tarkik Borah last year in a lavish destination wedding in Udaipur, Rajasthan, an event reportedly funded by Bishal Phukan, who is said to have spent around Rs5 crore on the extravagant celebration.
