North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey recently announced the arrest of April Thomas, 43, from Vass, on felony charges of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense. The North Carolina Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division reported that Thomas allegedly secured $8,660 in accident insurance from the American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus (AFLAC) through fraudulent means.
According to arrest warrants, the offenses occurred on January 18, and Thomas was taken into custody on June 10. Following her arrest, she was fingerprinted and subsequently released on a written promise to appear in Moore County Court on June 13.
In a statement, Commissioner Causey highlighted the impact of insurance fraud on consumers, stating, “Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet. Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
