Rohit Saav Arrested in Kolkata for Steel Scam

Gang Created Fake Website to Defraud Buyers

by Ananya Mehta

25-year-old man named Rohit Saav was apprehended in Kolkata by the cybercrime branch of Ghaziabad police for his involvement in a fraudulent scheme that exploited a fake website mimicking a legitimate steel company.

The gang operated by creating the website, posing as Jindal Steel and Power Limited. They deceived customers by demanding advance payments and issuing counterfeit invoices for orders that were never fulfilled.

Victims were often coerced into paying additional fees under the guise of obtaining a user code linked to Jindal Steel when they followed up on their undelivered orders.

The arrest followed a complaint by Subhash Tyagi, who claimed to have lost Rs14.9 lakh after being promised doorstep delivery of rebar without extra charges. Tyagi’s complaint, filed on September 25, initiated an investigation that led police to Saav in Kolkata on October 15, with the assistance of West Bengal authorities.

According to Saav, the gang had strategically promoted their fake website on Google to ensure it ranked highly in search results for TMT bars. A phone number on the site connected victims to their team, which would then use different numbers to contact them. The lack of prior complaints against the listed number contributed to the site remaining operational. Saav also revealed that gang members operated from various locations in Bihar.A
