24-Year-Old Arrested in Nottingham Sextortion Scam

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a sextortion scam targeting a victim in Nottingham. Detectives from Nottinghamshire Police conducted the operation after gathering intelligence on the blackmail scheme, leading them to an address in Hampshire.

Sextortion involves criminals posing as attractive women online to befriend men, typically in their teens or early twenties, on social media platforms. The scammers encourage their victims to send nude images or videos, then threaten to share that material with family and friends unless they receive payment.

On October 26, 2023, police received a call from a distressed man in his 20s, who had been conversing with a woman he believed was a student. After sharing intimate images, he faced threats from her, stating she would distribute his photos unless he complied with demands for hundreds of pounds, which he paid.

Detective Inspector Chris Berryman, who leads the team investigating sextortion cases, emphasized the manipulative nature of such crimes. He noted that while many offenders operate from overseas, there are instances where suspects are based in the UK.

Following the investigation, a warrant was executed at the Hampshire address, resulting in the arrest of the 24-year-old on suspicion of theft. He has since been released on bail as the investigation continues.

Detective Inspector Berryman reassured victims that Nottinghamshire Police takes all reports of sextortion seriously and is committed to providing support and pursuing justice for victims.
